What "hydrolysed" actually means
Whole collagen is a large, structurally complex protein — too big to be absorbed intact through digestion in a way that would let it do anything useful once eaten. "Hydrolysed collagen" or "collagen peptides" means the protein has been broken down, using heat and enzymes, into much shorter peptide fragments that can actually be absorbed. This is why you take "collagen peptides" rather than "collagen" as a supplement — the peptide form is the only version digestion doesn’t simply break down into unusable pieces anyway.

They also work through a different route entirely — digestion and systemic absorption, rather than direct application to skin. The evidence for each is evaluated completely separately; a strong result for one doesn’t transfer to the other.
What to look for
- Hydrolysed collagen or "collagen peptides" specifically — not "collagen" alone, which is unlikely to be well absorbed.
- A stated dose in grams, since most trials use meaningful daily amounts rather than token servings.
- Third-party testing, as with any supplement.
