Do collagen peptides actually work?

There's real human trial evidence for modest skin hydration and elasticity benefits — genuinely better supported than most supplement categories. The honest caveat: effect sizes are generally small, and a meaningful share of the supporting studies are industry-funded.

Should you care? This is one of the more genuinely evidenced supplement categories, which makes it worth getting the nuance right rather than either dismissing it entirely or overselling it the way most marketing does.

  • Not supported: dramatic “anti-ageing” transformation, or benefits comparable to topical retinoids.

What the evidence actually shows

Several randomised, placebo-controlled human trials have measured oral collagen peptide supplementation against outcomes like skin hydration, elasticity and, in some studies, wrinkle depth, generally over 8 to 12 weeks of daily use. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis found statistically significant improvements in both skin hydration and elasticity versus placebo.1 A separate meta-analysis of 26 randomised trials covering 1,721 participants reached the same conclusion, though it also found the effect on hydration varied by collagen source and how long people took it.2 One individual trial — 64 participants, 1,000mg daily for 12 weeks — found significantly higher skin hydration at both 6 and 12 weeks, plus improvement in three measures of wrinkling by week 12.3 Not every trial agrees on every outcome: one placebo-controlled study found improved hydration but no change in elasticity or skin thickness.4 This puts collagen peptides on genuinely firmer ground than many supplement categories, where trial evidence is thinner or absent entirely — while still leaving real study-to-study variation in exactly which outcomes improve.

The honest caveats

Two things worth knowing before you buy

  • Effect sizes are generally modest, not dramatic — hydration and elasticity measurements that improve meaningfully in a lab sense are not the same as a visibly transformed appearance.
  • A meaningful share of the supporting literature is funded by collagen supplement manufacturers. That doesn’t make the findings false, but it’s a reason to weight the size of the reported effect somewhat conservatively, the same caution we apply to Matrixyl’s manufacturer-commissioned data.

What it does not do

  • Match topical retinoids or well-evidenced topical peptides for measured collagen or wrinkle-depth change — the oral route’s effect sizes are generally smaller in the published literature.
  • Rebuild joint cartilage — some trials suggest modest joint-comfort benefits, but this is a different and less settled question than the skin evidence.
  • Work meaningfully below the doses used in trials — many trials use several grams daily; a token amount in a multi-ingredient supplement is unlikely to replicate the studied effect.

Is it worth taking?

If skin hydration and elasticity are your goal, and you take a dose in line with what trials actually used, the evidence is real enough to justify trying it for a few months and judging the result — with realistic, modest expectations rather than the transformation implied by most marketing.

Funding audit, completed: two of the four trials above (Kim et al. and Miyanaga et al.) are authored entirely by employees of the companies whose own collagen products were tested, even where the paper's own conflict-of-interest section reports no external funding — that is a real conflict, whatever the disclosure says. The other two (Batool et al. and Pu et al.) show no industry authorship we could find, though we were not able to independently pull every paper's full funding statement ourselves. This is the basis for calling "a meaningful share of the supporting literature" industry-linked, rather than an unspecific caveat.
