How to use copper peptides
Clean skin, at night, before your moisturiser — and never in the same layer as pure vitamin C.
In brief
Should you care? Yes — this is the ingredient people most often waste. Copper peptides are chemically fussy, and layered with the wrong thing they stop working. Get two rules right — no pure vitamin C in the same layer, and apply to clean skin before heavier products — and the rest is detail.The short version

- Never with: pure vitamin C in the same layer.
- With retinol: fine, but separate them.
The basic routine
- Cleanse and leave skin slightly damp.
- Apply the serum — a few drops, face and neck. Thin watery products go before thick ones.
- Wait a minute or two so it absorbs rather than being diluted.
- Moisturiser on top.
- Sunscreen every morning, regardless of what you used the night before.

What not to mix it with
Pure vitamin C — the one that genuinely matters
This is the real incompatibility, and it is chemistry rather than caution. L-ascorbic acid — the standard water-soluble vitamin C in most bright orange serums — is a reducing agent. In contact with a copper complex it alters the copper chemistry: the ascorbic acid is consumed, and the reaction generates reactive oxygen species. You lose both ingredients and gain something you did not want. The reaction runs faster as pH rises.2
A nuance most articles miss
The problem is specifically with L-ascorbic acid, not every form of vitamin C. Gentler derivatives behave differently. If your product uses a derivative, the concern is much smaller — but unless the brand is clear about which it uses, assume the strict version and separate them.
What to do: vitamin C in the morning, copper peptides at night. That solves it completely and costs nothing.
Strong acids and exfoliants
Glycolic, salicylic and similar sit at a low pH that pushes the copper peptide outside its stable range.1 Use them on different nights rather than stacking.
EDTA and chelating agents
Less about layering, more about what is already in your bottle. Chelators bind metal ions — which is exactly what a copper peptide is built around. Where EDTA appears in the same formula the copper can be stripped and the peptide inactivated.3 Worth scanning the ingredient list for.
How to tell if it's working
Texture and hydration first, at two to four weeks. Firmness and fine lines at eight to twelve. Plateau around twelve to sixteen. Take a photograph in the same light on day one — memory is a poor instrument for this, and everyone overestimates how their skin looked before.
What it does not do
Don't expect these
- Work faster if you use more. Twice daily will not beat once daily; it will finish the bottle sooner.
- Fix sun damage you are still accumulating. Without daily sunscreen you are filling a leaking bucket.
- Do anything in three weeks. Judge at twelve.

- The higher copper-binding affinity of EDTA versus GHK's own binding constant (Freedman JH, Pickart L, Weinstein B, Mims WB, Peisach J (1982), Biochemistry 21(19):4540–4544) means EDTA would be expected to strip copper from the complex — a chemical inference from binding chemistry, not a study that directly tested EDTA in a finished cosmetic formulation.
