What is a peptide?
A short chain of amino acids linked together — the same building blocks that make up proteins, just fewer of them. That one structural fact explains most of what follows: why peptides do so many different jobs, and why the word “peptide” on its own tells you almost nothing.

The basic definition
A peptide is two or more amino acids joined together by a chemical bond called a peptide bond. By convention, chemists call a chain a "peptide" when it’s roughly under 50 amino acids long, and a "protein" once it gets longer and starts folding into more complex three-dimensional shapes. That boundary is a convention, not a hard scientific line — some molecules, like insulin, get called both a peptide and a protein depending on the source you read.
Where peptides come from
Your body makes thousands of them constantly — insulin, oxytocin, and the collagen fragments your skin produces are all peptides doing specific jobs. Beyond what your body makes naturally, peptides used in products and medicine fall into two groups: ones identical to a molecule your body already produces, and fully synthetic ones designed in a lab to do a specific job, sometimes based on a natural peptide’s structure and sometimes not.
What "peptide" doesn’t tell you
This is the part most coverage skips. Because "peptide" only describes a molecule’s shape — a short amino acid chain — it says nothing about what that molecule does once it’s in or on your body. A collagen-signalling skincare ingredient, an appetite-regulating hormone drug, and an unproven compound sold in a grey-market vial are all, technically, "peptides." Treating the word as a category of effect, the way "vitamin" or "probiotic" sometimes get used, is where a lot of marketing quietly oversells.
