What does a peptide serum actually do?

“Peptide serum” promises almost nothing on its own. A peptide is just a short chain of amino acids — the word describes a shape, not a job. What matters is which specific peptide is in the bottle and what instruction it sends to your skin.

In brief

Should you care? Yes — this is the single most useful reframe on the whole site. “Contains peptides” tells you as much as “contains chemicals.” The question that actually matters is which peptide, at what concentration, doing which job.

  • Signal peptides (e.g. Matrixyl 3000): tell cells to make more collagen.
  • Carrier peptides (e.g. copper peptides): deliver a trace element, usually copper, that supports repair.
  • Neurotransmitter-inhibitor peptides (e.g. Argireline): softly dampen the signal behind expression lines.

Why "peptide serum" is a near-meaningless label

A peptide is simply two or more amino acids linked together — a structural description, like "powder" or "liquid." It says nothing about what the molecule does once it is on your skin. There are thousands of possible peptides, and cosmetic chemistry uses a small number of very different ones for completely different jobs.

A product that lists "peptide complex" on the front and a blend of unnamed peptides in small print is telling you almost nothing you can act on. The ingredient list is where the real information lives.

Why this matters when you’re buying

Because these categories solve different problems, "which peptide serum is best" is usually the wrong question. The right one is closer to: what is actually wrong, and which category of peptide addresses it? Someone with static fine lines from collagen loss wants a signal or carrier peptide. Someone bothered by forehead creasing from expression wants a neurotransmitter-inhibitor. A product can combine categories, which is often sensible, but only if you know that’s what you’re buying.

A quick way to sanity-check any peptide product

Look past "peptide" on the front of the pack to the actual INCI name in the ingredients list — copper tripeptide-1, palmitoyl tripeptide-1, acetyl hexapeptide-8, and so on. If you can’t find a specific named peptide anywhere on the label, treat the "peptide" claim on the front as marketing rather than information.

How to read a peptide serum label properly

  1. Find the specific peptide name, not just the word "peptide."
  2. Look it up — which category it belongs to, and what evidence exists for that specific molecule.
  3. Check the concentration, where the brand discloses it — percentages are usually the difference between a tested dose and a token one.
  4. Match it to your actual concern, rather than buying "a peptide serum" as a category.
