Do peptides work for hair growth?

Peptide-for-hair-growth marketing is built almost entirely on animal studies and patent filings rather than controlled human trials — for copper peptide specifically, and for the category generally.

Should you care? If you’re considering a peptide product specifically for hair growth, yes — this is one of the widest gaps between marketing and evidence on the whole site. The claim traces to animal studies and patents, not human trials.

Where the claim comes from

The hair-growth claim attached to copper peptides traces back to patent filings and animal studies from research into wound healing, where GHK-Cu was observed to affect hair follicle activity in mice.1 That research is real, but it is a long way from "this serum will regrow your hair" — animal follicle biology and human scalp response to a topical cosmetic product are not the same test.

What actual human evidence exists

We have not found a properly controlled, published human trial specifically testing a copper peptide (or a general "peptide complex") product against a placebo for hair density or growth rate, of the kind that exists for its collagen effect on skin. Some small, often industry-funded studies exist for specific commercial products, but nothing at the scale or independence of the skin-collagen research covered on the main copper peptide page.

The pattern worth noticing

The same molecule (GHK-Cu) has genuinely strong human evidence for one use — topical skin collagen — and very weak human evidence for another — hair growth — marketed under the same ingredient name. A brand can honestly say "backed by research" while pointing at the skin studies to sell a hair product. Always check which specific claim the evidence actually supports.

Why this gap is easy to miss

Marketing copy often cites "peer-reviewed research on GHK-Cu" without specifying that the cited research measured skin collagen, not hair growth. Both claims are technically about the same molecule, which makes the borrowed credibility easy to miss unless you check what was actually measured in the study being referenced.

What has better evidence for hair

This is outside what this Library currently covers in depth, but for context: minoxidil and finasteride have substantially larger and more rigorous human trial bases for hair growth than any cosmetic peptide currently marketed for the purpose. If hair growth specifically is your goal, that is where the stronger evidence currently sits — not with a peptide serum, whatever the label claims.
